Tourism 4.0

ESA Space Solutions is a program that supports entrepreneurs in Europe in the development of businesses using satellite applications and space technology. They provide different types of funding opportunities such as Kick-Starts, Feasibility Studies, and Demonstration Projects to support the development of sustainable services utilizing space assets.

ESA Business Applications, which is part of the ARTES 4.0 Programme, offers zero-equity funding ranging from €60k to €2M+ per activity, personalized support from a member of the ESA team, technical and commercial guidance, access to their network of partners, and the credibility of the ESA brand. They are particularly interested in applications of space technology to previously untapped consumer markets using satellite data or technology.

How to apply

There are two main ways to apply for funding and support from ESA Business Applications:

Open Call for Proposals

  • You can submit an idea at any time via this webpage . Your idea can cover any topic but must involve the use of satellite data or technology.
  • You can also explore our ‘Thematic Calls for Proposals’. Here, you are invited to submit an idea on a particular theme within a specified timeframe. Your idea will not be judged against other proposals. See a list of Thematic Calls for Proposals on this webpage under ‘Non-Competitive Thematic Calls for Proposals’

To date, these countries include Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Lithuania, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, The Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. Please check ESA STAR Publication for the precise list of participating member states for each opportunity.

The size and nature of any potential funding involved is subject to authorisation by the involved National Delegation(s). As a result, bidding teams need to obtain a Letter of Authorisation from their national delegations, and include it as part of their full proposal.

Another thing that is good to know is…

What is the Announcement of Opportunity (AO) by ESA?

ESA has issued an Announcement of Opportunity (AO) to support the development of space-based services enabled by innovative digital solutions to encourage the tourism and travel industry’s transition to the new normal, especially in the post-COVID-19 era. The AO aims to develop potential space technologies to accelerate good practices towards sustainable development that will help the tourism sector reach the Agenda 2030.

The focus areas include the use of digital and connectivity solutions, seamless and safe travel, and guide investments and measuring impact.

  • Satellite Earth Observation (SatEO) can be used to monitor infrastructure, land cover changes, and habitats.
  • Global Navigation Satellite Systems (SatNav) are essential for tracking tourists, enabling location-based services, and monitoring visitor flow.
  • Satellite Communications (SatCom) are necessary for reliable connectivity in remote areas and to support digital solutions.
  • Space assets can provide benefits to the tourism industry such as improved infrastructure management, enhanced visitor experiences, and increased safety and security.
  • Integration with emerging technologies such as Augmented/Virtual Reality and Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning can create innovative and effective end-to-end solutions.
